Anakin as a troubled teen...

"Life as a House"

We watched it tonight, and it wasn't bad. I certainly don't think much of Hayden Christenson's acting in Star Wars--how many variations of "petulant" can get you through two movies? I have to say, though, that the role they gave him in this movie worked better for him. Kevin Kline is pretty good, as usual, and really, while it's maybe somewhat formulaic, the show has a nice feel to it, and I'd recommend it as a cheap rental.

Bought some books yesterday, and finally getting around to reading Camus' The Plague, which I've meant to do for years. It might be too obscure for the Kid Who Sits Behind You , though.

I had a idea for a witty (or less boring, at least) post but it involved a Missy Elliott song that I must've heard 50 times in my booth while people were dancing down below, but I couldn't find it after downloading about 7 in hopes I'd guessed right. Oh well. If Bayley, or perchance Nicole, happens to read this, maybe email me because i think you'd be able to steer me in the right direction.

meanwhile, I seek new inspiration, or at least another career to write about.

I didn't like that movie.
Jo made me watch it because she thinks he's hot, but it did nothing for me. He does nothing for me.
God. I hate movies! I hate rebellious boys who reconcile with their dads! I hate reconcilliation!

No. I lied.
I love it.
But I didn't like that movie. One bit.
I don't know why I felt like pointing that out. Or making this comment.
Maybe it's because I haven't talked to you for a million years.
What's up homedawg?
Why so quiet and hiding?

Ah. I understand. You're building a house. And trying to not actively beat up your son for doing drugs and prostituting; in fact!! you want to be a good father.

Ohshitson. Am I talking about you still??

Identity crisis-eeyoso.

I'm done.

I would have liked to see it but I get bored sitting in shows solo with no one to make witty asides to.

re: Life As A House

Okay, I wrote this somewher but I can't remember where, but I actually watched that movie because of the combination of Kevin Kline, Ian Sommerhalder, and Hayden Christensen (Gawd are any of those names right?). Anyhoo, I told myself that I knew it was a cancer movie and I wasn't going to cry and I got all the way to the end.

Suddenly (SPOILER!!!!!)

But then they went to the trailer park to the lady in the wheel chair, and Hayden's all, "a while back your parents were in a car accident..."

Frickin waterworks!!! Cried like a baby and not cute, aww crying, but like slobbering, snotty, WAAAHHHHH!!!! crying.

It was scary and I promised never to withhold tears ever again.

I loved Life As A House, although it's been a long, long time since I've seen it.

I think Hayden is very cute and thought the movie was pretty decent also. I would recommend it to people as well.

Dunno, my mom read The Plague when she was in high school, and one of my husband's favorite books that he read in high school was his The Stranger. Camus writes in a plain language sort of way, that I'm sure there's lots of folks who've had to (or wanted to, in my case) tackle his books.

Although, I will tell you, after reading The Plague, I developed a phobia about fleas. And while I never liked rodents to begin with, it turned me into a shrieking ninny about seeing or thinking about them.

I suppose you're right K--I work at a school with a fair sized french immersion program, so writers like Camus tend to be read in the original language by senior students there as well.

I was thinking I should do L'Etranger--"The Stranger" to U.S. folks and "The Outsider" to those of us with a British influence... (Or is it the other way around?)

It's kind of like how the first Harry Potter book was changed from the "Philospher's Stone" to "Sorcerer's Stone" for the states. Did it get changed back, or is it sold under that title there?

I *think* it's still the Sorcerer's Stone... not sure. I read the first book, and part of the second, and was so utterly annoyed by Rowling's writing "style" that I let off reading anything else. I'm sticking to the movies. She can really spin a great tale, but the way she implements the English language leaves me unimpressed.

The US knows the book as The Stranger, so I'd suspect then that the UK title is The Outsider. I find it interesting that the Spanish translation of the title is El Extranjero, which is more approximate to be The Foreigner, and can allude to a connotation of being a traveller abroad.

I'm not sure on the spanish title--I liked the first three HP books, read them after my kids did, partly to see what all the fuss was about and sort of expecting not to like them. I was a little less enthused about the fourth one, and really didn't like book 5 at all.

I grew up on a diet of British kids' books--my mom's from Nottingham, and relatives there used to send us books, plus we'd get all the Enid Blyton books from the library. (I was dismayed when I was taking an adolescent lit. course in university and ran across an article which showed how very racist Enid Blyton's stuff was--and they were dead right about it)

Harry Potter has some of the "feel" of those books to me.

I'm not expecting to be that thrilled with #6 either.

It is funny in Canada how we do seem to be in the middle of both worlds--you'll go look in a bookstore and see the Penguin version of something like Camus with the british title and then nearby you might find the same book by an american publisher titled differently.

That Missy Elliot song is probably that "1,2 Step" song. I know she's in part of it... it's by Ciara.

No--I downloaded that and it wasn't. The one I'm thinking of has this one section where's she's sounding much more nasal than usual, and it sounds just like Cartman off South Park. I was going to post a clip of each to prove it.

(btw--there's an actual elementary school named South Park here in town, like there probably are in a number of places, and I hear their t-shirts sell better than most schools')

I don't remember the first HP book.
The second wasn't very good, in my oppinion
The third was great.
The fourth was good, wholesome, epic fun. But not at good as the third.
The Fifth... well, let's just not talk about the fifth.

Even though I hated the last one, I'm still excited about the sixth. My friends and I are splitting the cost and camping out for a few days while I read it out loud to them. It's a tradition.

You expect me to know that kind of shit music? I'm hurt, really. :P

I'll probably go see Milly's thing on Friday, if I find out what time it's at.

I'd like to see Life as a House because Paige raved about it, and how hot Hayden is in it. I think it would be interesting.

I just meant living in a dance studio where hip-hop is king you might be exposed to such things...

I'm going to Milly's thing as long as she eventually tells me where it its--somewhere in Fairfield, I think she said.
